Consumer Loan Software: What It Needs to Do

Consumer loan software has one job that sounds simple: handle a large number of small loans without the office drowning in paper. A shop counter sells a phone on instalments, a clerk takes the form, someone approves it, and for the next year a collector chases a weekly payment of a few hundred rupees. Multiply that by a few thousand customers and the system matters.

Fast application intake

Small-ticket lending lives or dies on speed at the counter. If the customer has to wait forty minutes for a sixty-minute process, he walks to the next shop. A good intake screen captures the applicant, the item or purpose, the amount and the tenure in one place, without flipping through tabs.

Taxhint’s consumer loan software page lists single-screen applicant capture, Aadhaar and PAN verification, and CIBIL score checks and uploads. Which checks you run, and for which loan size, is your credit policy and the current RBI direction for your lender type, so confirm that with your CA. The software should carry out your policy, not invent one.

Approval limits by role

Not everyone in the office should be able to sanction everything. A branch clerk might approve up to one amount, a branch manager a higher one, and anything above goes to head office. Put that in the system rather than in a circular nobody remembers.

  • Each role has a limit, set by the owner or the board.
  • A loan above a user’s limit moves up automatically, not by phone call.
  • Every approval is logged with name, time and amount.

The log is what your auditor will ask for. It also settles the awkward conversation when a loan goes bad and someone asks who cleared it. The page also mentions user activity logs and the option to restrict logins by IP address, which supports this kind of control.

Sanction letters and instalment schedules

Once approved, the sanction letter should come out of the system, with the loan’s own numbers filled in. Typing it by hand is where mistakes enter. Right after, the instalment schedule is built, and for small loans it is rarely monthly only.

FrequencyTypical use
WeeklySmall cash-flow customers, daily-wage households
FortnightlySalary or market-cycle earners
MonthlySalaried borrowers, larger tickets

How the instalment amount is worked out is covered in consumer loan EMI and scoring in software. Ask to see the schedule for a real loan and check the total interest by hand with a calculator once. It takes five minutes and teaches you more than any brochure.

Collection and overdue follow-up

Small loans are collected in small pieces, from many places. The software should accept money at the branch counter, from a field agent’s phone and online through a payment gateway or QR code, and post all of it to the same loan. The page lists all three, along with overdue tracking with ageing and SMS reminders.

  • A field agent records a receipt on the spot and the customer gets an SMS.
  • The overdue list sorts by days late, so the collector knows whom to see first.
  • Each follow-up call or visit is noted against the account.

If vehicles back some of your loans, vehicle loan software adds records that a plain consumer loan system does not need. For a broader view of the product types, see our loan management software buyer’s guide. Price questions go to our pages on consumer loan software cost.

Common mistakes

  1. Buying software built for one big loan type and forcing small-ticket loans into it.
  2. Setting approval limits on paper only.
  3. Allowing the schedule to be edited after sanction without a log.
  4. Collecting cash in the field and entering it days later.
  5. Treating a high credit score as the whole decision.

What to check in a demo

  • Enter one application and time it from start to sanction letter.
  • Raise a loan above a clerk’s limit and watch where it goes.
  • Create weekly, fortnightly and monthly loans and compare the schedules.
  • Take a receipt on the agent app and check it appears at the branch.
  • Open an overdue account and read its follow-up history.

FAQs

What is consumer loan software?

It is a system that runs small personal and durable-goods loans from application to closure: intake, approval, sanction letter, instalment schedule, collection and overdue follow-up. The aim is to keep many small loans moving without a file for each one.

Can one system handle weekly and monthly instalments?

It should. Taxhint’s consumer loan page lists weekly, fortnightly and monthly instalments, so you can set the frequency per product instead of keeping separate registers.

Do we still need credit checks if approval is quick?

Quick intake is not the same as skipping checks. Build the verification steps into the approval path, and check current RBI directions for your lender type on what is required.

Is this the same as microfinance software?

Not quite. Microfinance usually works through groups and centre meetings, while consumer loans are typically individual and small-ticket. Some lenders run both, so check that the system supports each product on its own terms.
