MSME ZED Certification (Bronze, Silver & Gold)

ZED (Zero Defect Zero Effect) certification rates how well an MSME manages quality and its environmental impact, at three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Any Udyam-registered MSME can join, the government subsidises up to 80 per cent of the cost for micro units, and each certificate is valid for three years. We do the portal work and get your unit ready for the assessment.

What it is

ZED certification is the Ministry of MSME’s rating of how an enterprise runs: “zero defect” in what it makes and “zero effect” on the environment. It looks at areas such as leadership, quality management, energy management and environment management, and places the unit at Bronze, Silver or Gold.

It runs under the MSME Sustainable (ZED) Certification Scheme. The Quality Council of India (QCI) designs the certification model and carries out the desktop verification, while Silver and Gold assessments are done by QCI-accredited assessment agencies. Everything starts on the ZED portal of the Ministry of MSME, with the ZED Pledge.

Who it applies to

Udyam-registered MSMEs

Every enterprise registered on the Udyam portal is eligible, whether micro, small or medium. No Udyam registration, no ZED.

Manufacturing units first

The scheme guidelines focus the first phase on manufacturing MSMEs, where defects and environmental impact can be measured on the shop floor.

Suppliers who need proof

Enterprises that supply larger companies, or want state incentives and cheaper credit, use ZED to show their systems work. Think of a Faridabad auto-parts unit whose OEM buyer starts asking for a quality rating at vendor review.

Why it matters

Pay a small share of the cost

Micro units get 80 per cent of the certification cost subsidised, small units 60 per cent and medium units 50 per cent. Since 11 November 2023, eligible women-owned MSMEs get a 100 per cent subsidy.

Qualify for further support

Once you hold at least Bronze, you can seek handholding support of up to ₹5 lakh, and a subsidy of 75 per cent (up to ₹50,000) on one testing or quality certification per level.

Tap state and lender benefits

The Ministry reports that 22 States and Union Territories have built ZED into their industrial policies with extra incentives, and 19 financial institutions offer fee or interest concessions.

Bronze, Silver and Gold compared

Costs and subsidy rates are from the 2022 scheme guidelines. The cost covers verification, assessment, certification, monitoring and taxes.

Subsidy: 80 per cent for micro, 60 per cent for small, 50 per cent for medium enterprises. An extra 10 per cent applies to MSMEs owned by women or SC/ST entrepreneurs, or located in the North-East, Himalayan, Left Wing Extremism-affected, island or aspirational districts. An extra 5 per cent applies to units in SFURTI or MSE-CDP clusters.

The ₹10,000 joining reward is deducted from the certification cost first, and the subsidy applies to the rest. Here is how it works in practice. A micro unit going for Silver starts at ₹40,000. Take off the ₹10,000 reward and ₹30,000 is left; the 80 per cent subsidy covers ₹24,000, so the unit pays ₹6,000. For Bronze, the reward wipes out the cost entirely.

  • Quality records, such as inspection and rejection logs
  • Process flow and machinery list
  • Energy and environment records, such as electricity bills

How it works

1

Register on the ZED portal

We register your unit on the ZED portal using your Udyam number. If the Udyam record shows the wrong category or activity, we correct it first, because the subsidy rate follows it.

2

Take the ZED Pledge

The pledge is an online commitment to Zero Defect Zero Effect values. Taking it earns the ₹10,000 joining reward.

3

Apply for your level

We prepare the documents and the self-assessment, then you pay your net share on the portal and apply for Bronze, Silver or Gold.

4

Clear the assessment

QCI verifies Bronze applications on documents. For Silver and Gold, an accredited agency assesses the unit remotely or on site, and the certificate follows.

Timelines

Use the joining reward within a year

Here is the catch: the reward is valid for one year and usable only once. Take the pledge when you are ready to apply, not months before.

Prepare for surveillance at 18 months

Silver and Gold units have a remote surveillance assessment after 18 months.

Renew or upgrade within three years

Each certificate is valid for three years. You may upgrade to a higher level at any time before it expires.

What happens if your certification lapses or is withdrawn

Certificate recalled

If the unit is found non-compliant with applicable regulatory or statutory norms, the competent authority can recall or withdraw its reports and certificates.

Money not refunded

Any amount paid through the ZED portal is non-refundable, non-transferable and cannot be adjusted against another activity or scheme.

Benefits end at expiry

After three years the certificate expires, and incentives tied to it stop until you certify again.

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply for ZED certification?

Any MSME registered on the Udyam portal can apply, whether micro, small or medium. The scheme guidelines focus the first phase on manufacturing enterprises. You register on the ZED portal with your Udyam number, take the ZED Pledge and then apply for Bronze, Silver or Gold. If your Udyam registration is missing or out of date, we fix that first.

How much does ZED certification cost?

Under the scheme guidelines, Bronze costs ₹10,000, Silver ₹40,000 and Gold ₹90,000, inclusive of taxes. The government subsidises 80 per cent for micro, 60 per cent for small and 50 per cent for medium enterprises, after deducting the ₹10,000 joining reward. So a micro unit pays ₹6,000 for Silver. We confirm the rates in force on the portal before you pay.

Is ZED certification free for women-owned MSMEs?

Yes, for eligible units. The Ministry of MSME has given a 100 per cent subsidy on ZED certification cost to eligible women-owned MSMEs since 11 November 2023. The ownership must be correctly reflected in your Udyam registration. If your unit qualifies, we make sure the category is claimed so you pay nothing for certification.

What is the difference between Bronze, Silver and Gold?

The depth of the check. Bronze is granted on document upload and desktop verification by QCI. Silver involves a remote assessment, and Gold an onsite assessment, both by QCI-accredited agencies. Silver and Gold also have a remote surveillance assessment after 18 months. Many units start at Bronze and upgrade, which the scheme allows at any time before expiry.

How long is a ZED certificate valid?

Three years, at every level. Silver and Gold units go through a surveillance assessment after 18 months, costing ₹10,000 and ₹20,000 respectively, with the same subsidy percentages. You can upgrade to a higher level before the three years end, at the same cost and subsidy as a fresh application for that level. We track these dates so nothing lapses by accident.

What is the ZED Pledge and the joining reward?

The ZED Pledge is an online commitment to Zero Defect Zero Effect values, taken on the ZED portal. On taking it, each MSME gets a limited-purpose joining reward of ₹10,000, valid for one year and usable once. It is deducted from the certification cost before the subsidy is applied. For a micro unit, it covers Bronze entirely under the guideline rates.

What support is available after certification?

Units with at least Bronze can seek handholding support of up to ₹5 lakh: up to ₹2 lakh for consultancy and up to ₹3 lakh for technology upgradation or zero-effect solutions, with the same subsidy percentages. There is also a 75 per cent subsidy, capped at ₹50,000, on one testing, quality or product certification per level. We help you plan which support to use first.

Is the ZED scheme still running in 2026?

Certification was still being granted in 2026. The 2022 guidelines provided financial support up to 31 March 2026, and the Ministry of MSME reported in August 2026 that over 6.67 lakh MSMEs had been certified as of 7 July 2026. Because rates and terms can be revised after that date, we check the current position on the ZED portal for your case before you pay anything.

Does Taxhint certify my unit?

No. Certification is done by QCI and QCI-accredited assessment agencies under the Ministry of MSME. Our role is the portal registration, pledge and application, plus getting your documents and records ready for the assessor. Testing and technical audits, where needed, are done by accredited labs and consultants. You deal with one team from pledge to certificate.
