How it works
How to Renew an FSSAI License Online?
The FSSAI license renewal can be done online through the FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System) portal. Food business operators (FBOs) need to log in to the portal, select the Renewal of License/Registration option, enter their existing FSSAI license number, update necessary details, upload the required documents, and pay the applicable fee. Once the application is submitted, FSSAI authorities review it, and in some cases, conduct an inspection before approval. After approval, the renewed license can be downloaded from the portal.
Food License Renewal Process
The food license renewal process follows a systematic approach to ensure compliance with food safety laws. First, businesses must check their license expiry date and initiate the renewal process at least 30 days before expiry. The renewal option becomes visible on your FoSCoS dashboard four months before expiry. We recommend filing 30 to 60 days out so a query does not push you past the date.
₹100 per day for late filing
A delay in filing before expiry attracts a late fee of ₹100 for each full day.
Days 1 to 90 after expiry
The licence can still be renewed, but at three times the annual fee — and you may not trade in the meantime.
Days 91 to 180 after expiry
Renewal is still possible at five times the annual fee. The cost rises faster than most operators expect.
Beyond 180 days
The licence is deactivated permanently. There is no renewal route left and you must apply for a fresh licence from the beginning.
What happens if you do not
Operating a food business on an expired licence is operating without a licence. Under the Food Safety and Standards Act that exposes the business to penalty and, in serious cases, prosecution — and it is the first thing an inspector checks.
The commercial consequences usually bite first. Marketplaces and aggregators suspend listings against a lapsed licence, institutional buyers and caterers stop purchase orders, and consignments held at a port on an expired central licence accrue demurrage while the position is regularised.
