DIN Allotment: Get Your Director Identification Number
DIN allotment gives you the Director Identification Number you need before you can be a director of any company or LLP. Existing companies file Form DIR-3 on the MCA V3 portal. New companies get it inside SPICe+. We prepare the documents and file.
What it is
DIN allotment means getting a Director Identification Number, the number that identifies you as a director on MCA records. One person, one DIN, for every company you serve.
The law is in Sections 152 to 159 of the Companies Act, 2013 and the Companies (Appointment and Qualification of Directors) Rules, 2014. For a new company, the DIN is applied for inside the SPICe+ form. For an existing company or LLP, you file Form DIR-3 on the MCA V3 portal.
Who it applies to
A first-time director
You have never been a director. No DIN, no name on a board resolution or consent form. Start here.
A new company or LLP promoter
Founders of a new company get DINs through SPICe+ at incorporation. For an LLP, designated partners need a DIN as well. See private limited company registration.
A professional or relative joining later
Say a Faridabad family firm wants its finance head on the board by the March meeting. She applies on DIR-3 first. The company appoints her after.
Why it matters
No DIN, no appointment
A person without a DIN cannot give the director’s consent or be shown on MCA records as a director. The company’s plan stalls.
One identity across filings
Your DIN connects every company you serve. It also drives your DIR-3 KYC.
Faster board changes
Having the DIN ready means the later change in directors filing can be done inside its 30-day window.
Documents required
Proof of identity
- Aadhaar, voter ID, passport or driving licence
- PAN, if provided
Proof of residence
- Recent address proof
- Passport-size photograph in JPG, under 1 MB
For signing
- Applicant’s own DSC
- DSC of an authorised signatory of the company or LLP
- Optional extra files, up to five, PDF or JPG
How it works
Check for an existing DIN
We check whether the person already holds a DIN, because Section 155 does not allow a second DIN.
Pick SPICe+ or DIR-3
SPICe+ for a company being incorporated, DIR-3 for an existing company or LLP.
Prepare the attachments and DSCs
We check the photograph, scans and names against the PAN. We arrange the applicant’s DSC if it is missing, and the company’s signatory signs second.
File on the MCA V3 portal and pay
We file the form and pay the fee within 7 days of upload. If the form is marked for resubmission, we fix it inside the 15-day window.
Use the DIN in the appointment
Once allotted, the DIN goes into the appointment papers. We also note the DIR-3 KYC date.
Timelines
Payment
The fee must be paid within 7 days of uploading the form, or the SRN is cancelled.
Resubmission
If the form is marked ‘Resubmission Required’, resubmit within 15 days.
DIR-3 KYC
Once every three financial years, due 30 June after the third year, anchored to the financial year of DIN allotment. Contact detail changes: 30 days.
What happens if you get it wrong
A second DIN
Section 155 bars a second DIN and Section 159 provides the penalty. The extra DIN has to be surrendered.
Missed DIR-3 KYC
The DIN is deactivated. Reactivation and late filing cost ₹5,000. Until then the person cannot sign MCA forms as a director.
Form rejected or cancelled
Missed payment or resubmission windows cancel the SRN. You start again and the appointment waits.
Frequently asked questions
Who needs DIN allotment, and when?
Anyone who wants to be a director of a company or LLP needs a Director Identification Number before the appointment takes effect. Section 152 of the Companies Act, 2013 makes it mandatory for a proposed director to have one. A person without a DIN cannot sign the director’s consent or be shown as a director on MCA records. Here is the catch: the DIN must exist before the board meets. Apply first.
Which form is used for DIN allotment?
It depends on the situation. If the person will be a director of a company being incorporated, the DIN is applied for inside the SPICe+ form. If the company already exists, you file Form DIR-3 on the MCA V3 portal. The DIR-3 government fee is a flat ₹500, and it carries no additional fee for delay. We pick the right route and prepare the attachments.
What documents are required for a DIN application?
You need proof of identity, proof of residence and a passport-size photograph in JPG format under 1 MB. If a PAN is provided, it is attached as well. The form is signed with the applicant’s own DSC and with the DSC of an authorised signatory of the company or LLP. If you do not have a DSC yet, we arrange it first so the filing is not held up.
Can a person hold more than one DIN?
No. Section 155 of the Companies Act, 2013 bars applying for, obtaining or holding more than one DIN, and Section 159 carries the penalty. A director who ends up with two should have the extra one surrendered. Duplicate detection is also why some DIR-3 forms go to manual review. Check with us before applying if you think a DIN may already exist in your name.
What if the DIR-3 form needs resubmission?
You must resubmit within 15 days of the form being marked ‘Resubmission Required’. Payment of the fee must also be completed within 7 days of uploading the form, or the SRN is cancelled and you start over. In practice, most resubmissions come from blurry scans or a name that does not match the PAN. We check every attachment against the PAN and address proof before we file, which keeps the form out of this loop.
Does a DIN expire?
The DIN itself does not lapse with time, but it can be deactivated if you miss DIR-3 KYC. Since 31 March 2026, DIR-3 KYC is due once every three financial years, by 30 June after the third year. A late filing and reactivation both cost ₹5,000. Mobile, email or address changes must be updated within 30 days. We track the due date for every director we work with.
How is DIN different from DSC?
DIN is the director’s identity number on MCA records. DSC is the digital signature used to sign e-forms. You need both: a DIN to be a director and a DSC to sign the appointment form, the DIR-3 form and later filings. The two are applied for separately, so we usually start the DSC first. That small step prevents a later delay.
Is DIN allotment the same as appointing a director?
No. DIN allotment only gives the person an identity number. The actual appointment needs board or shareholder approval and Form DIR-12 within 30 days. A person with a DIN is not a director until the company appoints them. If you also need that second step, our change in directors service covers DIR-2, DIR-8, resolutions and DIR-12.
What it costs
Our fee plus the government fee that applies to your case, quoted before you commit. Tell us the situation and we will price it exactly.
The government fee for Form DIR-3 is a flat ₹500. A DIN applied for inside SPICe+ is part of the incorporation filing fees.
