SA8000 Certification in India

SA8000 is the international standard for decent work, published by Social Accountability International. Certification is granted by an accredited certification body after a two-stage audit, lasts three years and is monitored by surveillance visits, typically twice a year. SA8000:2026 was published on 1 January 2026, and certification to the 2014 version is possible only until 1 January 2027.

What it is

SA8000 certification shows that a workplace treats its workers fairly and can prove it. It covers child and young workers, forced labour, health and safety, freedom of association, discrimination, working hours, wages and the management system that keeps all of this in place. An independent certification body audits the site, talks to workers and checks records before it certifies.

SA8000 is a voluntary standard, not an Indian law. But it sits on top of Indian law: the auditor checks that you meet local law first, which today means the four Labour Codes in force from 21 November 2025, and then the stricter SA8000 requirements where they go further.

Here is how it usually starts. A Faridabad garment exporter gets a new supplier code from a European buyer that asks for a recognised social certification. The factory already pays minimum wages, but overtime is recorded loosely and some workers have no appointment letters. Those two gaps, not the policy documents, decide how fast the factory can be certified.

Who it applies to

Garment, textile and leather exporters

Factories supplying international brands and retailers that ask for a recognised social certification in their supplier code of conduct.

Manufacturers in global supply chains

Engineering, auto component, handicraft and food units whose buyers check labour conditions before placing orders.

Service companies

Facility management, security and other labour-heavy service firms. Think of a Gurugram housekeeping contractor bidding for a corporate campus contract where the client asks for proof of fair labour practices.

Why it matters

One audit buyers recognise

A single accredited certificate can answer the social compliance questions that different buyers would otherwise ask in their own audits.

Finds labour law gaps early

The audit tests wages, overtime and appointment letters against the Labour Codes. Our payroll compliance team fixes those gaps before a labour inspector or a buyer finds them.

Feeds your ESG reporting

Large listed customers may ask suppliers for social data for their own sustainability reports. SA8000 records give you checked, independent answers.

  • Social Performance Team minutes

How it works

1

Run a gap check against SA8000 and Indian law

We compare your wage, hours, contract labour, safety and records against the Labour Codes and SA8000, and list what must change.

2

Set up the management system

We draft the policies and set up a grievance channel and a Social Performance Team with elected worker representatives. From then on, every month adds evidence. Sites that also want ISO 45001 for health and safety can share much of this groundwork.

3

Complete the self-assessment

Social Accountability International’s online self-assessment is the first formal step. It costs US$300 and takes 60 to 90 minutes.

4

Clear the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits

An accredited certification body runs a Stage 1 readiness audit of one to two days, then a Stage 2 audit of two to ten days depending on size, with worker interviews.

5

Hold the certificate through surveillance

Close any non-conformities, receive the three-year certificate and prepare for announced and unannounced surveillance visits, typically twice a year.

Timelines

Prepare before you book audits

This depends on your gaps. In practice, a unit that must fix wages or overtime needs a few pay cycles of clean records before the auditor can see the change.

Plan for a three-year cycle

Valid for three years, subject to on-site surveillance visits, typically twice a year, before recertification.

Move to the 2026 version

SA8000:2026 was published on 1 January 2026. Certification to SA8000:2014 remains possible only until 1 January 2027.

The 2026 version also extends scope to workers across business relationships, moves to outcome-based criteria and replaces a simple pass or fail with progressive scoring.

What happens if you fail the audit

No certificate until fixed

Non-conformities must be closed with evidence before the certification body grants or continues the certificate.

Suspension after surveillance

Serious findings in a surveillance visit can lead to suspension or withdrawal of the certificate.

Labour law exposure

Gaps in wages, overtime or appointment letters are also breaches of the Labour Codes, with penalties under Indian law regardless of SA8000.

Frequently asked questions

Is SA8000 certification mandatory in India?

No. SA8000 is a voluntary international standard, not a legal requirement in India. It becomes necessary in practice when a buyer or client asks for it. The Labour Codes in force from 21 November 2025 are mandatory, and an SA8000 audit checks those first. So the work you do for SA8000 also tightens your legal compliance.

Which version should I certify to in 2026?

SA8000:2026, published on 1 January 2026, is the new version. Organisations may still be certified to SA8000:2014 only until 1 January 2027. If you are starting now, it usually makes sense to build your system to the 2026 version so you do not redo the work within a year. We plan the gap check to the version your certification body will audit.

How long is an SA8000 certificate valid?

An SA8000 certificate is valid for three years, subject to on-site surveillance monitoring. Surveillance includes announced and unannounced visits, typically twice a year, and the certificate can be suspended if serious problems are found. Treat it as a running system, not a one-time audit. We help you keep records audit-ready between visits so surveillance is routine.

Who issues SA8000 certificates?

Only a certification body accredited by Social Accountability Accreditation Services (SAAS) can issue an SA8000 certificate. Social Accountability International writes the standard but does not certify sites itself. Before you sign with a body, check that it is accredited for SA8000 and active in India. We help you compare bodies on audit days and availability.

What are the working hour limits under SA8000?

Under SA8000:2014, the normal working week is what local law allows and never more than 48 hours, with one rest day in seven and voluntary overtime capped at 12 hours a week. Indian law under the Labour Codes must also be met, and the stricter limit applies. Overtime records are among the first things an auditor checks, so we review them early.

How long does the audit take?

The Stage 1 readiness audit typically takes one to two days, and the Stage 2 certification audit takes two to ten days depending on the size and scope of your site. Worker interviews are part of Stage 2. Preparation time before the audits depends on your gaps. With records in order, the audit days are spent verifying, not hunting for papers.

Do contract workers count?

Yes. SA8000 looks at everyone working on your site, including workers supplied by contractors, and the 2026 version extends scope further across business relationships. Expect your contractors’ wage and PF records to be checked, and under Indian law the principal employer carries responsibilities too. We review contractor compliance as part of the gap check so there are no surprises.

What does Taxhint do, and what does the certification body do?

We run the gap check against the Labour Codes and SA8000, fix registrations and payroll records, draft policies and help set up the management system. We also coordinate the self-assessment and the certification body. The audits and the certification decision are made only by the SAAS-accredited body. The audit stays independent of us.
