RDSO Registration: Vendor Approval for Indian Railways Supply
RDSO registration means getting your factory and product approved by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation so you can supply controlled railway items. Many tenders ask for it before they look at your price. We prepare the application file, coordinate with RDSO and file online.
What it is
RDSO, based in Lucknow, is the technical body of the Ministry of Railways. It writes specifications and approves the vendors who may supply safety-critical and design-controlled items such as signalling, telecom and rolling-stock components. An approved vendor appears in RDSO’s vendor directory. Zonal railways and production units use that list when they buy.
Approval is item-specific. You apply for the item you make, RDSO checks your plant, your quality system and your product against its specification, and only then lists you. It is not a general licence that opens every railway tender, and it is separate from enlistment on the GeM portal or with a zonal railway.
Who it applies to
Manufacturers of railway items
A fabrication unit in Faridabad that makes brackets, fasteners or electrical parts built to a railway drawing, and wants to sell to a production unit or zonal railway, usually needs RDSO approval for that item first.
Signal and telecom suppliers
RDSO publishes separate vendor directories for signal and telecom equipment. A company that assembles such equipment applies against the matching RDSO specification.
Existing suppliers adding items
A vendor approved for one item has to apply again for each new item or new plant. In practice, the second file is lighter. We keep the file organised so repeat applications reuse your common papers.
Why it matters
Tenders open up
Many railway tenders for controlled items accept bids only from RDSO-approved sources. Without the listing, you can only sell as a sub-supplier to an approved vendor.
You pass a proper quality check
The approval process looks at your plant, testing facilities and process control. That discipline helps with other buyers as well.
You hold a continuing listing
Approval can be reviewed and withdrawn for quality failures. A clean file and prompt replies keep your listing alive.

Where RDSO registration fits among railway approvals
| Route | What it does |
|---|---|
| RDSO vendor approval | Approves you as a source for a specific controlled item |
| GeM registration | Lets you bid on the government e-marketplace |
| Zonal railway enlistment | Registers you with a railway for general stores and works |
Many suppliers need two or more of these. The sequence matters: for a controlled item, RDSO approval usually comes first, and the others follow.
How it works
Check your item against the specification
We confirm which RDSO directorate and specification cover your product, and whether the item needs approval at all. Picture a Faridabad unit that makes relay housings: one call and one drawing tell us where it sits.
Close the gaps in your plant file
We compare your documents against RDSO’s checklist and list what is missing. Often it is small: a calibration record, a quality procedure. Your team or your consultants fix the technical gaps.
File the application with RDSO
We assemble the application and supporting papers, submit them through RDSO’s vendor application channel and track the reference number.
Handle queries, inspection and trials
RDSO may raise queries, inspect the factory or ask for sample trials. We coordinate dates and reply to queries. The inspection and any testing are carried out by RDSO and accredited labs.
Plan the work after approval
Once you are listed, we diarise renewals and changes, and prepare the papers if you add items or move the plant.
Timelines
No fixed statutory clock
RDSO sets its own processing steps and they differ by item. Plan for months, not days. We give you an estimate once we see your item.
Before you bid
Start the application well before a tender you want. Do not expect approval to arrive in time for a bid that is already open.
At renewal and changes
Approval is reviewed periodically. A change of plant, ownership or manufacturing process should be reported, so keep us informed.
What happens if you skip it
You cannot bid for controlled items
Where a tender requires an RDSO-approved source, a bid without it is rejected at the technical stage.
Supplying unapproved items is risky
Railways can reject consignments of controlled items that come from an unapproved source.
An incomplete file stalls
Missing records or unanswered queries can leave the application pending or lead to its closure.
Frequently asked questions
What is RDSO registration?
RDSO registration is approval of a manufacturer or supplier by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation for a specific railway item. After a review of your plant, quality system and product, you are listed as an approved source. Railways then buy that item from you without further technical doubt. It is item-specific, so each new product needs its own application.
Is RDSO registration mandatory to sell to Indian Railways?
It is mandatory only for items where the railway’s tender conditions require an RDSO-approved source. General stores and many non-safety items are bought without it. Check the tender document, which names the approval you need. If you are unsure which route applies to your product, we read the tender with you.
Who can apply for RDSO registration?
Indian manufacturers, including MSMEs, can apply, provided they have the facility to make the item and a working quality system in place. We review your eligibility and the item specification before you spend on the file, so you know early whether the route fits.
How long does RDSO registration take?
There is no single statutory timeline. It depends on the item, how complete your file is, how soon RDSO inspects your plant and whether trials are needed. Expect several months for a new item. A complete application and prompt replies to queries are the two things within your control.
Do I need ISO 9001 for RDSO registration?
A documented quality system is central to approval, and ISO 9001 certification is the common way to show one. Check the specific RDSO requirement for your item, because some need more than ISO 9001. If you do not have it yet, we can point you to the ISO 9001 certification route first.
What happens after RDSO approval?
You are listed in the relevant vendor directory and can bid where an approved source is needed. The approval is reviewed from time to time and can be withdrawn for quality failures or false information. Report changes in plant, ownership or process promptly, and your listing stays secure.
Is RDSO registration different from GeM registration?
Yes. GeM is a government buying platform where you list products and bid. RDSO approves your technical capability for controlled railway items. Many suppliers need both, and they do not replace each other. See our page on GeM registration for the portal side.
Can a startup or small unit get RDSO approved?
Yes, size does not bar you. RDSO looks at your facility, quality system and product, not your turnover alone. A small unit with a good plant, test records and a clear specification match can be approved. Registering on Udyam helps you access MSME benefits that tenders offer.
What does Taxhint do in RDSO registration?
We check the item and specification, prepare your application file, file it, reply to queries and plan post-approval compliance. We do not carry out the plant inspection, product trials or lab testing. RDSO and accredited labs do that, and we coordinate with them.
What it costs
Our fee plus the government fee that applies to your case, quoted before you commit. Tell us the situation and we will price it exactly.
RDSO sets its own application fees and they can vary by category of applicant. We confirm the current fee on RDSO’s official channel before you pay, and include it in your quote. Lab testing, calibration and ISO certification are paid to those bodies separately.
Ready to begin?
Tell us which railway item you make and we will check the specification, the gaps and a realistic RDSO registration plan.
