IATA Registration for Travel Agents in India

IATA accreditation gives your travel agency its own IATA numeric code and access to the Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP), so you can issue airline tickets directly. IATA decides the application; we set up the company, prepare the financials and assemble the documents it asks for.

What it is

IATA, the International Air Transport Association, runs the Travel Agency Program. An agency that meets its standards is accredited. It gets a unique IATA numeric code, access to the BSP for issuing and settling airline tickets, and the right to use the “IATA Accredited Agent” logo. In India most people simply call this “IATA registration”.

It is not a government licence. The rules sit in IATA’s Travel Agent’s Handbook, currently Edition 46, Update 2, effective 1 July 2026, which is binding on every accredited agent. It contains the Passenger Sales Agency Rules and, in Section 3, the Local Financial Criteria for each country, including India. Applications are made on the IATA Customer Portal.

Here is the catch for most Indian applicants: the IATA form is the easy part. What takes time is the business behind it. Think of a Faridabad agent who has sold tickets for years as a proprietor through a consolidator. Before applying, the business often needs a proper entity, a GST registration, clean books and financial statements that will stand up to IATA’s review. That is the part we do.

Who it applies to

New travel agencies

Founders starting a ticketing business who want to issue tickets in their own name rather than through another agent.

Agencies buying through a consolidator

Agents with steady air sales who want their own code and BSP settlement.

Multi-location agencies

Groups with branches, or with offices in more than one country, which may suit IATA’s GoGlobal model with one set of financial criteria for all locations.

Why it matters

Issue tickets yourself

Accredited agents sell and settle airline tickets through the BSP, which handles reporting and payment between agents and participating airlines.

An identity airlines recognise

The IATA numeric code identifies your agency across the industry, with airlines, global distribution systems and suppliers.

A mark clients can check

You can display the “IATA Accredited Agent” logo, which tells corporate clients and tour operators you meet IATA’s standards.

GoLite, GoStandard or GoGlobal

IATA offers accreditation models with different payment access and financial requirements. Each is subscribed for a single annual fee.

ModelWho it suitsKey feature
GoLiteAgents who want accreditation and worldwide recognition with simpler requirementsNo minimum financial guarantee required to issue air tickets
GoStandardAgents selling mainly in one country who want full payment optionsAccess to all IATA standard payment solutions
GoGlobalAgencies with locations in several countriesOne set of financial criteria, quarterly review, a single financial guarantee

For GoStandard, how much financial security you need depends on the Local Financial Criteria for India and IATA’s assessment of your financial statements. We read those criteria against your accounts before you apply, so the guarantee question does not come as a surprise.

Documents required

About the business

  • Certificate of incorporation, LLP agreement or partnership deed
  • PAN and GST registration
  • Proof of business premises (rent agreement or ownership)
  • Details of owners, directors or partners

Financial

  • Financial statements in the form the Local Financial Criteria ask for
  • Bank account and authority for direct debit of BSP remittances
  • Financial security, such as a bank guarantee, where IATA requires it

Operations

  • Details of staff handling ticketing
  • Information on premises and systems security
  • Completed application on the IATA Customer Portal

How it works

1

Form the entity that will hold the code

If you are starting fresh, we register the business, usually a private limited company or an LLP, and then PAN, GST and a current account.

2

Pick GoLite or GoStandard

We compare the two against your sales plan and the Local Financial Criteria for India. A two-person agency in Gurugram selling holiday packages has different needs from a corporate travel desk.

3

Get the financial statements in shape

In practice, this is where applications slip. We bring the books up to date, prepare or review the financial statements, and coordinate audit or certification as the criteria require.

4

Build the file and submit on the portal

We collect the documents and help you complete the application on the IATA Customer Portal. When IATA comes back with a query, we prepare the reply.

5

Arrange security and go live

If IATA asks for financial security, we coordinate the bank guarantee with your bank. Once approved, you receive your IATA code and BSP access.

Timelines

Entity and tax registrations first

Company or LLP incorporation, PAN and GST must be in place before the IATA application, since the application is made in the entity’s name.

An annual fee every year

Accreditation is kept by paying IATA’s single annual fee and continuing to meet the Local Financial Criteria and agency rules.

BSP remittances on schedule

Ticket sales are reported and settled through the BSP on the dates set for the market. The money is collected by direct debit from your bank account.

What happens if you sell without it

You depend on someone else’s code

Without accreditation you issue tickets through another accredited agent or consolidator, on their terms.

No BSP settlement

Only accredited agents report and settle with participating airlines through the BSP. Without it, that direct relationship is closed to you.

Late remittances have consequences

Once you are accredited, a missed BSP remittance can lead to action under the Passenger Sales Agency Rules. Plan cash flow around settlement dates.

Frequently asked questions

Is IATA registration a government licence in India?

No. IATA accreditation is a private industry accreditation, not a government licence. IATA is the global association of airlines, and its Travel Agency Program sets the standards an agency must meet. The rules are in the Travel Agent’s Handbook, currently Edition 46, Update 2, effective 1 July 2026. Your business still needs its usual Indian registrations, such as company incorporation and GST, which we handle alongside.

What is the difference between GoLite and GoStandard?

GoLite has simpler requirements and needs no minimum financial guarantee to issue air tickets. GoStandard gives access to all IATA standard payment solutions, and its financial security depends on the Local Financial Criteria and IATA’s review of your financial statements. Both are subscribed for a single annual fee. Pick the one that matches your sales plan and the payment options your customers use.

What financial criteria apply in India?

India’s Local Financial Criteria are published in Section 3 of IATA’s Travel Agent’s Handbook. They set out the financial statements you submit and how IATA assesses whether financial security is needed. The criteria are agreed through IATA’s regional Agency Programme Joint Council and can change between editions. We read the current version against your accounts before you apply, so you know where you stand.

Do I need a company to apply for IATA accreditation?

You need a legally registered business in whose name the accreditation is held. A private limited company or LLP is common because it keeps the agency’s finances separate and produces the kind of financial statements IATA reviews. A proprietorship or partnership firm can also be a legal entity. We advise on the structure before you register, so you do not have to restructure later.

What is the BSP?

The BSP, or Billing and Settlement Plan, is IATA’s system through which accredited agents report ticket sales and pay participating airlines. It replaces separate settlement with each airline. Remittances are collected by direct debit from the agent’s bank account on dates set for the market. The BSP Manual for Agents, with Resolutions 800, 812 and 818g, sets the procedures. Keep the account funded on settlement dates and it runs smoothly.

Will IATA ask for a bank guarantee?

It depends on your model and financial standing. GoLite needs no minimum financial guarantee to issue air tickets. Under GoStandard, IATA assesses your financial statements against India’s Local Financial Criteria and may ask for financial security, such as a bank guarantee. The amount is case-specific, so we do not guess it. We prepare your accounts carefully so the assessment reflects your real position.

What is TIDS, and is it the same as accreditation?

No. TIDS, the Travel Industry Designator Service, gives an agency an industry-recognised identification code for dealing with suppliers. It is not full accreditation and does not by itself give BSP access. TIDS can suit an agency that books through others and only needs a recognised identifier. If you want to issue and settle tickets yourself, accreditation is the route.

What does Taxhint do in the IATA application?

We handle the Indian side: company or LLP formation, PAN, GST, bookkeeping, financial statements, audit coordination and the document file IATA asks for. We help you complete the application on the IATA Customer Portal and coordinate a bank guarantee if one is required. IATA alone decides accreditation. Our job is to make sure the application goes in complete.
