CIBIL Correction: Fix Wrong Entries in Your Credit Report
CIBIL correction means raising a dispute so the bureau and your lender fix wrong entries in your credit report. Under RBI’s 2025 directions, your lender gets 21 days and the bureau 30 days in all, or you earn ₹100 a day. We prepare the dispute, evidence and follow-ups.
What it is
Your credit report is built from data that banks and NBFCs send to credit bureaus. Mistakes creep in: a loan shown as open after closure, a late payment you did not make, a duplicate account, or someone else’s loan on your file. Lenders read this report, so one wrong entry can lower your score and sink a loan application.
CIBIL correction is the process of getting that data fixed. It runs under the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005 and the RBI (Credit Information Companies) Directions, 2025, in force from 28 November 2025. You raise a dispute with the bureau, the bureau asks your lender, and the lender corrects the record or explains why it will not.
Who it applies to
Borrowers with a wrong late-payment mark
If your report shows overdue days on a loan you paid on time, the dispute asks the lender to prove it from its own ledger.
People whose closed loans still show open
A settled or closed account that still appears live inflates your obligations. We chase the lender for the closure update.
Business owners and guarantors
A founder whose loan application was refused because of a duplicate or unknown account needs the file cleaned before the next loan. See also our project report for bank loan service.
Why it matters
Loans and cards depend on it
Banks check your report before approving credit. A correct file means fewer rejections and a better chance of a lower interest rate.
The law gives you a clock
Here is what helps: your lender has 21 days to give corrected information and the bureau 30 days in all. If either is late, you can claim ₹100 for each calendar day of delay.
Errors stay until you dispute them
A wrong entry stays until someone disputes it with proof. Acting early protects your next loan application.
What a correction can and cannot do
We keep expectations honest. Correction fixes wrong data. It does not erase accurate history.
| We can help with | We cannot do |
|---|---|
| Wrong overdue days or dates | Delete a genuine default or late payment |
| Closed loan still shown as open | Promise a particular score |
| Duplicate or unknown account | Force a lender to change a correct record |
| Wrong personal details such as PAN or address | Replace what a lender reports about a debt you still owe |
Where Taxhint fits
We read your report, build the dispute, collect the proof and follow up with the lender and the bureau. We are not a bureau and do not control scores. A lender decides whether its own record is right.
In practice, many cases are simple. A borrower in Faridabad who closed a two-wheeler loan years ago finds it still shown as live, with the last payment unreported. One closure letter and a well-written dispute often settles it. Harder cases need more rounds, and we say so upfront.

How it works
Pull your report and mark every error
We read your report line by line, list every wrong or missing entry and match each one to your own records.
Raise the dispute with the bureau
We prepare the dispute and the evidence file. The bureau then asks the lender to confirm or correct the data.
Follow up with the lender
We track reference numbers and write to the lender where the 21-day window passes without a reply.
Re-check the report and escalate if needed
Once updated, we re-check the report. If compensation is wrongly denied, you can approach the RBI Ombudsman under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021.
Timelines
Lender response
Credit institutions must provide corrected information within 21 days of the bureau’s request.
Total resolution time
The bureau has the remaining 9 days to update the record and tell you, making 30 days in all.
Data refresh cycle
Lenders reported fortnightly under the 2025 directions. RBI’s amendment moves reporting to weekly from 1 July 2026, so fixes show faster.
What happens if the dispute is not resolved on time
Compensation after 30 days
If the dispute runs past 30 days, you are due ₹100 for each calendar day of delay. When more than one party caused the delay, the amount is shared by their share of the delay.
Rejection must come with reasons
If a correction request is rejected, the lender must tell you why, so you can reply with better proof.
Wrong entry stays
If you do nothing, the wrong entry keeps hurting each new loan or card application, and you may be refused again.
Frequently asked questions
How long does CIBIL correction take?
The RBI directions allow 30 days in all. The lender has 21 days to give corrected information and the credit bureau has the remaining 9 days to update the record and inform you. If it runs over, you are due ₹100 per calendar day. We track each date and push where the clock runs out.
How much compensation can I get for a delay?
You can claim ₹100 for every calendar day beyond 30 days. If both the lender and the bureau were late, the amount is split in proportion to each one’s share of the delay. If compensation is wrongly denied, you can go to the RBI Ombudsman. We help you prepare that claim.
Can you remove a genuine late payment or default?
No. Correction applies to wrong data. A late payment or default that is accurate stays on your report for as long as the bureau’s rules allow. What we can do is make sure only correct entries remain, and guide you on settling dues. We will not promise a score.
How often can I get a free credit report?
Under the 2025 directions, you are entitled to one free full credit report, including your score, during a year from each bureau. Reports are updated by lenders on a regular cycle that moves to weekly from 1 July 2026. We start every case from your latest report.
Which documents do I need for a dispute?
You need your PAN and address proof, the credit report with the wrong entry marked, and proof such as a loan statement, receipts or a closure letter. Lender emails and reference numbers help too. Send what you have, and we will tell you what else would strengthen the dispute.
Does it matter which bureau shows the error?
Yes, because each bureau holds its own file. India has four credit information companies, and an error in one may not appear in the others. The lender usually corrects the source data, which flows to all bureaus it reports to. We check each report you hold and raise disputes where needed.
What if the lender rejects my correction request?
The lender must give you the reasons for rejecting the request. Use those reasons to add proof and dispute again. If a lender or bureau misses the timeline, you can claim compensation and, if it is denied, use the RBI Ombudsman. We prepare the second round so it answers the stated reasons.
Will my score rise right after the correction?
Your score is recalculated when the corrected data reaches the bureau, and it may move up or stay the same depending on what else is on your file. Weekly reporting from 1 July 2026 should help changes show sooner. We cannot guarantee a number, but we will re-check the report after the fix.
What it costs
Our fee plus the government fee that applies to your case, quoted before you commit. Tell us the situation and we will price it exactly.
The dispute itself with the bureau carries no government fee. If you also buy extra bureau reports, those carry the bureau’s own charges. We confirm any such cost for your case before we begin.
