DSC Class 2 vs Class 3 and USB Token Explained
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic ID that lets you sign documents and filings online. Class 2 and Class 3 are the two grades most businesses hear about. Both are stored on a USB token. Class 3 carries a higher identity check and is the one most portals ask for today.
Why it matters for business filings
Directors and authorised signatories sign MCA forms, GST returns, tenders and income tax filings with a DSC. If you pick the wrong class, the portal may simply refuse it, and you lose a day or two buying another. If you are starting out, our DSC service sorts the right class before you pay.
Class 2 vs Class 3 in plain words
- Class 2: identity is checked against documents. It was widely used for company filings in the past.
- Class 3: a stricter identity check, usually with a video or in-person verification. It is the grade accepted for e-tendering and is what most government portals now expect.
Rules change from portal to portal, so check what the specific filing asks for before you buy. When in doubt, Class 3 is the safer pick.
What the USB token does
According to the Controller of Certifying Authorities (cca.gov.in), the keys for Class 2 and Class 3 certificates must be stored in a secure crypto token that stays with the subscriber. That token is the small USB device. Your private key never leaves it, which is why you cannot just copy a DSC to another computer. Plug it in, install the driver, enter the PIN, and sign.
Where you will need one
- Company incorporation and annual MCA filings
- Signing GST returns for companies and LLPs, and for GST registration in some cases
- Income tax return filing for entities, including business tax returns
- Import-export code and trade registrations, and online tenders
Common mistakes
- Applying with documents that do not match the PAN or Aadhaar name.
- Forgetting the token PIN. Write it down somewhere safe.
- Letting the certificate expire on the portal and then finding out on the due date.
- Sharing the token with an accountant and never getting it back.
FAQs
Is a USB token compulsory for a DSC?
For Class 2 and Class 3, yes. The private key has to sit in a secure token held by you.
Can one DSC be used on several portals?
Yes. The same certificate can be registered on MCA, GST and income tax portals, as long as the class is accepted there.
Which class should a director choose?
Class 3 is the usual choice now, since it is accepted for most filings and tenders.
