AIS and Form 26AS Explained

Form 26AS is your tax credit statement: it shows tax deducted on your PAN, tax you paid, and refunds. The Annual Information Statement (AIS) goes further and lists many more financial transactions reported to the tax department. Check both before you file your return.

Why it matters

The department already holds data on your interest, dividends, securities trades and more. If your return does not match what is reported, a notice can follow. A careful check before filing your return avoids most of that.

What each one shows

  • Form 26AS: tax deducted or collected at source, advance and self-assessment tax paid, and refunds.
  • AIS: TDS and TCS, interest and dividend, securities and mutual fund transactions, tax payments, refunds and foreign remittance details, among others.
  • TIS (Taxpayer Information Summary): a shorter summary of AIS, with values the department uses to pre-fill your return.

Both are available after logging in to the income tax portal with your PAN.

How to use them

  1. Download the AIS and 26AS for the year.
  2. Match each TDS entry with your Form 16 or the deductor’s certificate.
  3. Tick off every interest and dividend entry against your bank and broker statements.
  4. If an AIS entry is wrong, duplicate or belongs to someone else, use the feedback option on the portal and mark it accordingly.

Missing TDS credit is usually a deductor problem, and it is worth chasing early. Our TDS filing team helps businesses fix this at source.

Common mistakes

  • Looking only at 26AS and ignoring AIS.
  • Reporting income only from your salary slip while savings interest sits in AIS.
  • Ignoring a wrong entry instead of giving feedback.
  • Not noticing TDS credited under a wrong PAN, which gives you no credit.

If a mismatch has already led to a notice, see our help on income tax notice reply.

FAQs

Is AIS the same as Form 26AS?

No. 26AS focuses on tax credits. AIS covers a wider set of reported transactions.

Can I correct a wrong entry in AIS?

You cannot edit it, but you can submit feedback on the entry through the portal.

Do I need to report everything shown in AIS?

Report your taxable income correctly. If an entry is wrong or not yours, mark it through feedback.
