What is Form 16? Parts, Uses and Due Date

Form 16 is the TDS certificate your employer gives you for tax deducted from your salary. It has two parts: Part A shows the tax deducted and deposited, and Part B shows your salary breakup and deductions. You need it when you file your income tax return.

Why it matters

Form 16 is proof that tax was cut from your pay and paid to the government. It makes income tax return filing quicker, because salary and TDS figures are already worked out. Employers who run payroll should also see payroll compliance.

What is inside

  • Part A: employer and employee details, PAN and TAN, and a quarter-wise summary of tax deducted and deposited.
  • Part B: gross salary, allowances, deductions, rebates and the final tax computed.

Per the income tax department, the employer must sign it, manually or digitally, and issue it by 15 June after the financial year in which tax was deducted. It applies where tax was deducted under section 192 on salary.

How to use and check it

  1. Compare Part A with the TDS entries in your AIS or 26AS. See AIS and Form 26AS.
  2. Check your PAN is right. A wrong PAN means no credit.
  3. Confirm Part B matches your actual salary slips and investments declared.
  4. Use the figures to file your return, adding income Form 16 does not cover, like interest or rent.

Common mistakes

  • Treating Form 16 as your whole income. Savings interest and freelance income are not in it.
  • Changing jobs and collecting Form 16 from only one employer. You need one from each.
  • Ignoring a mismatch between Form 16 and 26AS.
  • Not asking the employer to correct errors before filing.

Businesses that deduct tax from salaries must deposit and report it properly. Our TDS filing service covers that.

FAQs

Can I file my return without Form 16?

Yes. You can use salary slips, 26AS and AIS, but Form 16 makes it easier.

What if my employer did not issue Form 16?

Ask in writing first. You can still file using other records, and TDS credit shows in 26AS if the employer filed TDS returns.

Is Form 16A the same?

No. Form 16A is for tax deducted on non-salary payments like interest or professional fees.
