What is DIN (Director Identification Number)? Meaning, Uses and How to Get One

A DIN, or Director Identification Number, is an 8-digit number the Ministry of Corporate Affairs gives to a person who is, or plans to become, a company director. It is unique to you, stays the same across every company you join, and works as your identity on all MCA filings.

Why DIN matters for business registrations

No one can be appointed a director without one. When you set up a company, every proposed director needs a DIN before the incorporation papers can be approved. Founders who want a smooth start usually apply for it as part of private limited company registration, so the number is allotted together with the company.

Where and when a DIN is required

  • Incorporating a private limited company, OPC, public company or Section 8 company
  • Becoming a designated partner in an LLP
  • Joining an existing company as an additional director or filling a vacancy
  • Signing director-related MCA forms and annual filings

How to get or check your DIN

For a new company, up to three proposed directors can get a DIN through the SPICe+ form itself, so there is no separate application. If you are not part of a new incorporation, you can apply on its own through DIN allotment using ID proof, address proof, a photograph and a digital signature. You will need a digital signature certificate for most of these filings.

Once you hold a DIN, keep your contact details current and complete the director KYC when MCA asks for it. Directors who miss this can see their DIN deactivated, and reactivating it costs a late fee. Our guide to DIR-3 KYC covers the process. When a new person joins your board later, the paperwork sits under change in directors.

Common mistakes

  • Applying for a second DIN because the first one was misplaced. The law allows one DIN per person, so look the old one up instead.
  • Names or dates of birth that differ from the PAN and Aadhaar documents, which gets applications rejected.
  • Forgetting director KYC until the DIN is already deactivated.
  • Assuming a DIN makes someone a shareholder. It does not; see the guide below.

FAQs

How many digits does a DIN have?

Eight. It is allotted once and stays with the person for life, as long as the KYC requirements are met.

Can I hold two DINs?

No. The Companies Act allows only one DIN per individual. If you already have one, use it for every company.

Do I need a DIN to become a shareholder?

No. A DIN is needed only for directors. A shareholder who is not on the board does not need one.
