What is an Aadhaar Card? Meaning, Uses and Role in Business Registration

An Aadhaar card carries a 12-digit unique identity number issued by UIDAI, the Unique Identification Authority of India, to residents. It is linked to your biometric and demographic details. In business work, Aadhaar serves as photo ID and address proof, and it is used for e-KYC and PAN linking.

Why Aadhaar matters for business registrations

Most registrations start with the owner’s or director’s identity. For a proprietorship, Udyam registration is built on the owner’s Aadhaar. For companies and LLPs, Aadhaar is one of the usual documents to prove a director’s identity and address, along with PAN and a bank statement or utility bill.

Aadhaar also drives OTP-based verification. Your mobile number linked to Aadhaar is what receives the OTP, so a wrong or old number causes real delays.

Where and when Aadhaar is required

  • Udyam registration for micro, small and medium businesses
  • Director and partner KYC during company or LLP incorporation
  • Linking with PAN for income tax purposes
  • Authentication for GST registration of proprietors and partners
  • Bank account opening and e-KYC
  • Digital signature certificate issuance through e-KYC

Key points

You can download your e-Aadhaar from the UIDAI website with an OTP on your registered mobile. A masked Aadhaar, which hides the first eight digits, is available when you do not want to expose the full number. Share it that way wherever the full number is not needed.

Address changes can be made through the myAadhaar portal, and name, photo or biometric updates need an Aadhaar centre visit. UIDAI sets the fees and document lists, so check uidai.gov.in before you start.

One thing to remember: Aadhaar proves identity and residence, not citizenship, and it is not a replacement for a passport when a foreign national is involved.

Common mistakes

  • Mobile number not linked, so OTP never arrives
  • Address on Aadhaar is old, but the business needs the current address
  • Name spelling differs from PAN
  • Sending the full Aadhaar number when a masked copy was enough

FAQs

Is Aadhaar the same as an Aadhaar card?

Aadhaar is the 12-digit number. The card, letter, PVC card or e-Aadhaar is just the document that shows it.

Can Aadhaar be used as address proof for a company?

Often yes, for a director’s personal address, provided it is current. The registered office needs separate proof.

Should I share my full Aadhaar number?

Only where required. A masked Aadhaar is safer for routine submissions.
