Trademark Class 12: Vehicles and Apparatus for Locomotion
Class 12 covers vehicles and apparatus for moving by land, air or water, along with many vehicle parts such as tyres, bumpers, windscreens and engines for land vehicles. Auto-component makers, e-vehicle brands and cycle companies usually file here.
What class 12 covers
The official Class 12 heading is short: vehicles; apparatus for locomotion by land, air or water.
The explanatory note adds motors and engines for land vehicles, couplings and transmission parts for land vehicles, air cushion vehicles, remote control vehicles other than toys, parts of vehicles such as bumpers, windscreens and steering wheels, and treads and tyres for all kinds of vehicle wheels. The current edition is NCL 13-2026, in force from 1 January 2026, and the Trade Marks Registry follows it.

What is not in class 12
The WIPO note sends these vehicle-related goods elsewhere:
| Goods | Correct class |
|---|---|
| Engines and motors, other than for land vehicles | Class 7 |
| Starters, mufflers and cylinders for engines | Class 7 |
| Vehicle batteries, radios and mileage recorders | Class 9 |
| Lights for automobiles and bicycles | Class 11 |
| Automobile carpets | Class 27 |
| Tricycles for infants and toy scooters | Class 28 |
Here is the trap for parts makers: engine parts such as starters and mufflers go to Class 7, even though the engine itself is Class 12.
Who usually files in class 12
Supplying auto components
A Faridabad unit stamping its name on steering wheels and transmission parts for dealers files in Class 12. If it also makes engine starters, Class 7 joins in.
Building e-vehicles and cycles
Makers and assemblers of e-rickshaws, electric two-wheelers and bicycles selling under their own label.
Making mobility and marine goods
Wheelchair and mobility scooter brands, boat builders and drone makers.
Tips before filing
Search Class 12 and Class 7 together
Run a trademark search in Class 12 and Class 7, since parts makers often sell items in both.
Sort your parts list by class
Put bumpers in Class 12, engine parts like starters in Class 7, and batteries in Class 9.
Say “for land vehicles” where it applies
Engines and couplings sit in Class 12 only when made for land vehicles. The words decide the class.
Protect the brand on the part
If your name is stamped on parts sold to dealers, file it. Our trademark registration team handles the application and replies to any query.
Frequently asked questions
Are engine parts in Class 12?
Not all of them. Engines and motors for land vehicles fall in Class 12, but parts of motors and engines, such as starters, mufflers and cylinders, fall in Class 7. An auto-parts maker supplying both kinds of product needs both classes. We sort your full parts list against the WIPO notes before filing, so nothing ends up in the wrong class.
Is a car battery a Class 12 product?
No. Electric batteries for vehicles fall in Class 9, along with vehicle radios and mileage recorders. The Class 12 note lists them as excluded. A battery brand should file in Class 9. If it also sells other vehicle parts, Class 12 is added. We map each product to its class and file only what protects your business.
Which class covers e-rickshaws and electric scooters?
Electric vehicles, including e-rickshaws and electric two-wheelers, fall in Class 12 as vehicles for locomotion by land. Their chargers fall in Class 9. An e-vehicle brand often files in both. A toy scooter for children, however, is Class 28. We tell you which classes to file now and which ones can wait.
Are tyres in Class 12?
Yes. The Class 12 explanatory note covers treads for vehicles and tyres for all kinds of vehicle wheels. Rubber tracks for heavy machines such as crawlers are an exception and fall in Class 7. Tyre and tube brands usually need Class 12 alone. We run the search and draft the specification so the goods are described exactly.
What is the government fee for filing in Class 12?
Form TM-A costs ₹4,500 per class for an individual, startup or small enterprise filing online, and ₹9,000 per class for others. Paper filing costs ₹5,000 or ₹10,000. Each extra class adds one more fee. Our professional fee is separate and given upfront. Share your brand and parts list, and we will quote the exact total.
What it costs
Our fee plus the government fee that applies to your case, quoted before you commit. Tell us the situation and we will price it exactly.
The official Form TM-A fee is ₹4,500 per class for an individual, startup or small enterprise filing online, and ₹9,000 per class for others (₹5,000 and ₹10,000 on paper). IP India charges it for each class and each mark. The lower rate covers entities with Startup India recognition and small enterprises under the MSMED Act, 2006, often shown through Udyam registration.
