Barcode Registration (GS1 India)

Barcode registration gets your business a block of product numbers (GTINs) from GS1 India, the only body authorised to issue barcodes starting with 890 in India. Retail chains and online marketplaces use these EAN-13 barcodes to identify your products. We prepare the documents, pick the plan with you and file the application. GS1 India usually processes it in 7–10 working days.

What it is

A barcode on a product is a printed version of a number called a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number). In India the common format is the 13-digit EAN-13 barcode. Barcode registration means subscribing to GS1 India, which allots your business a block of these numbers, one for each product you sell.

GS1 India is a supply chain standards organisation set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry together with CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM, BIS, APEDA, IMC, FIEO, IIP and Spices Board India. It is the only authorised body in India to provide barcodes starting with “890”, and it also runs DataKart, the national product data repository that brand owners upload their product details to.

Who it applies to

You sell under your own brand

If you make or pack products under your own brand, such as food, cosmetics, hardware or apparel, and want them on retail shelves, you need your own GS1 numbers.

You sell your own label online

Say you started baking cookies at home and now sell them in branded packs on a marketplace. Your listings need GTINs. Many also protect the brand name itself; see our page on trademark registration for selling on Flipkart and Amazon.

You pack for someone else’s brand

Only the brand owner, or an entity it authorises, can apply. A Ballabgarh unit packing fasteners for a Delhi brand uses that brand’s numbers, or applies with its authorisation.

Why it matters

Get past the retailer’s listing check

GS1 India says businesses that want to sell through retail chains or e-marketplaces must get GS1 barcodes. These barcodes are accepted in domestic and international markets.

Let buyers verify your numbers

Retailers and marketplaces use GS1 India’s GTIN validation service to check barcode numbers against DataKart. A number bought from a reseller will not be registered to your brand there.

Stay clear of fake 890 codes

According to GS1 India, any company selling barcodes that start with 890 operates without legal authority, and both the buyers and the sellers of such barcodes face legal consequences, fines and damages.

Bank and payment

How a 13-digit barcode number is built

PartLengthWhat it tells
GS1 prefix3 digitsThe GS1 member organisation that issued the number: 890 for GS1 India
Manufacturer codeVariableYour business
Product codeVariableThe individual product
Check digit1 digitA calculated digit that catches scanning and typing errors

The prefix does not mean “made in India”. The first three digits identify the GS1 member organisation your business joined, not necessarily where the product was made.

GS1 India plans come in blocks of 100, 1,000, 10,000 or 1,00,000 numbers. Each number identifies one product, so count before you buy. Here is the catch: a Faridabad masala brand with six blends in three pack sizes has 18 products, not six. A 100-code plan still covers it, with room to grow. Once allotted, you give each product its own number and upload its details to DataKart.

How it works

1

Confirm who owns the brand

We confirm that the applicant is the brand owner and list every product variant that needs a number.

2

Pick the slab, codes and validity

The fee depends on your annual sales turnover slab, the number of barcodes and the validity: 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 years. We run the numbers on GS1 India’s fee calculator with you.

3

File the GS1 India form

We fill the GS1 India registration form and upload the PAN, status proof, turnover proof, request letter and cancelled cheque.

4

Pay GS1 India

Payment goes to GS1 India online, by NEFT or by demand draft. The fee covers registration, subscription, a refundable security deposit and GST.

5

Assign numbers and upload to DataKart

Once registration is through, usually in 7–10 working days, you assign a number to each product, upload the product data to DataKart and send the barcodes for printing. We diarise the renewal date.

Timelines

Expect 7–10 working days to register

GS1 India says registration usually takes 7–10 working days once the form, documents and payment are complete.

Renew before expiry and gain 3 months

Renew before the expiry date. If you renew early for 3, 5 or 10 years, GS1 India adds 3 months of extra validity.

Use the 15-day grace period, not more

Renewal within 15 days of the expiry date attracts no penalty. After that, a penalty of ₹1,180 applies for the next 30 days.

What happens if your subscription lapses

You pay ₹1,180 after day 15

Renewing between the 16th and 45th day after expiry costs a penalty of ₹1,180 on top of the renewal fee.

You lose the subscription after day 45

Beyond 45 days from expiry, GS1 India terminates the subscription for non-payment of renewal fees.

You risk legal action for using old codes

Companies that do not renew but keep using GS1 barcodes beyond the validity period attract legal action from GS1 India.

Frequently asked questions

Who issues barcodes in India?

GS1 India issues them. It is the only authorised body in India to provide barcodes starting with 890, and it was set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry with CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM, BIS, APEDA, IMC, FIEO, IIP and Spices Board India. GS1 India warns that any other company providing 890 barcodes operates without legal authority. Apply to GS1 India directly, or through us, and your numbers will be recorded against your own brand.

What is the cost of barcode registration in India?

For a business with turnover up to ₹5 crore, 100 barcodes for one year cost ₹50,200 under GS1 India’s fees effective 1 October 2026. That is ₹27,000 registration, ₹13,000 subscription, ₹7,200 GST at 18% and a ₹3,000 refundable security deposit. The fee rises with turnover, number of codes and validity; the top slab, above ₹1,000 crore, pays ₹89,612 for the same plan. Tell us your turnover and product count, and we will work out the exact figure.

How long does GS1 barcode registration take?

GS1 India says registration usually takes 7–10 working days. The clock starts once the form, documents and payment are complete, so a missing turnover proof or an unsigned request letter is the usual cause of delay. In practice, complete files are the ones that clear on time. We check everything before it goes in, so nothing on our side holds it up.

Can I buy barcodes cheaply from a reseller website?

No, not barcodes starting with 890. GS1 India says any company providing such barcodes operates without legal authority, and both buyers and sellers face legal consequences, fines and damages. Retailers and marketplaces also check barcodes through GS1 India’s GTIN validation service against DataKart, where a resold number will not match your brand. A reseller may quote less, but GS1 India is the only route that holds up.

What is the difference between a GTIN and an EAN-13 barcode?

The GTIN is the number; the EAN-13 is the 13-digit format and the barcode that carries it. GS1 India’s barcodes are known as GTINs or EANs. An EAN-13 number has a 3-digit GS1 prefix (890 for GS1 India), a manufacturer code, a product code and a final check digit. Scanners read the bars, and the system looks up the number. Get the number right and the printed barcode follows from it.

Does a barcode starting with 890 mean the product is made in India?

No. The first three digits identify the GS1 member organisation that issued the number, not necessarily the country where the product was made. 890 only tells you that GS1 India allotted the number to a brand owner registered with it. An Indian brand that sources some products from abroad still uses its own 890 numbers. The barcode identifies the product and its brand owner, not its origin.

What happens if I forget to renew my GS1 subscription?

You have 15 days after the expiry date to renew without penalty. For the next 30 days a penalty of ₹1,180 applies, and beyond 45 days GS1 India terminates the subscription for non-payment. Using GS1 barcodes after validity ends attracts legal action from GS1 India. If you renew early for 3, 5 or 10 years, you get 3 months of extra validity. We diarise the date, so the renewal is not missed.

Can a trader or contract manufacturer apply for barcodes?

Only the brand owner, or an entity authorised by the brand owner, can apply to GS1 India. A trader who resells another company’s brand uses that brand owner’s numbers. A contract manufacturer can apply only with the brand owner’s authority. A proprietorship applies with the proprietor’s PAN, and a newly formed company does not need to submit turnover proof. When brand ownership is clear on paper, the application goes through cleanly.

Pricing

Our fee plus the government fee that applies to your case, quoted before you commit. Tell us the situation and we will price it exactly.

Instead of a government fee, barcodes carry GS1 India’s own fee. From 1 October 2026, a plan of 100 barcodes for one year costs:

Up to ₹5 crore₹27,000₹13,000₹7,200₹3,000₹50,200

₹50–100 crore₹36,500₹13,755₹9,046₹3,000₹62,301
Above ₹1,000 crore₹53,500₹19,900₹13,212₹3,000₹89,612

Bigger blocks cost more. In the up-to-₹5-crore slab, one year costs ₹55,510 for 1,000 codes, ₹63,180 for 10,000 and ₹75,275 for 1,00,000. Longer validity spreads the cost: 100 codes for 10 years total ₹1,69,920, with no security deposit. The deposit is interest-free and refundable.
