What is DGFT and IEC (Import Export Code)
DGFT is the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, the government body that frames and administers India’s foreign trade policy. IEC is the Import Export Code it issues to businesses. Anyone importing or exporting goods or services commercially generally needs an IEC, along with a PAN-based business identity.
Why it matters
Customs, banks and shipping lines ask for your IEC when you clear goods or receive foreign payments. Without it, shipments can get stuck. You can start with import export registration through our team.
When you need an IEC
- Importing goods for trade or business use.
- Exporting goods, and in many cases services, for payment.
- Claiming export incentives or schemes.
- Opening certain foreign-exchange related facilities with your bank.
Exceptions exist for some personal imports and exports, so confirm for your case.
Key points
- The application is made online on the DGFT portal, linked to your PAN and business details.
- Keep your profile current. Details need to be updated as DGFT requires; see import export renewal for help.
- Other DGFT items may follow: the EPCG licence for capital goods, and a SCOMET licence for controlled items.
- Your bank may also need an AD code registration linked to your port for customs.
Common mistakes
Small errors cause most delays, and they are easy to avoid with a quick check before you apply.
- Starting a shipment before the IEC is active.
- Mismatch between PAN, bank and IEC details.
- Forgetting profile updates, leading to a deactivated code.
- Treating IEC as a substitute for other permits.
