What is DPIIT Recognition for Startups

DPIIT recognition is a certificate from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade that confirms your business as a startup under the Startup India initiative. It opens access to benefits such as tax relief, faster patent filing and easier government tenders, if you meet the eligibility rules.

Why it matters

Recognition is the entry ticket to most startup schemes. You can apply through Startup India registration once your entity is incorporated. Investors and government buyers also tend to look for it.

Who is eligible

As per the Startup India site:

  • The entity should be a private limited company, registered partnership firm, LLP or cooperative society.
  • It should not be more than 10 years from incorporation (20 for deeptech).
  • Turnover should not have crossed Rs. 200 crore in any year (Rs. 300 crore for deeptech).
  • It must not be formed by splitting up or rebuilding an existing business.
  • It should work on an innovative product, process or service with scope to scale.

Benefits to know

  • An income tax exemption for three consecutive years out of the first ten, for eligible startups. Check the conditions on our Section 80IAC tax exemption page.
  • Rebate on patent filing fees and fast-tracked applications.
  • Self-certification under some labour and environment laws.
  • Relaxations in government procurement.

Funding support such as the Startup India Seed Fund also requires recognition.

Common mistakes

  • Applying with a vague description that does not show innovation.
  • Assuming recognition automatically gives the tax exemption; that needs a separate approval.
  • Applying as a proprietorship, which is not an eligible entity type.
  • Missing incorporation or partnership documents at the time of filing.
