Customer and Member Mobile App: Balances, Statements and Repayment
A member mobile app for society software lets a depositor or borrower check loan status, repayments and notices on a phone, instead of waiting in the queue for a passbook entry. In a credit society or a Nidhi, a good share of counter time goes on small questions like “how much is due” or “did my instalment reach”. This guide covers what a customer app should do, how members and staff use it, and what to test before you buy.

What the member app is
A customer app, or loan statement app, is the member-facing side of your society software. It shows the member their own account, drawn from the same records your clerk sees at the counter. Nothing is typed twice.
Taxhint’s credit and thrift society management software lists two member-side apps. The member app covers loan status tracking, repayment management, document uploads and notifications. The user app covers loan applications, real-time status updates and document uploads. Whether balances and a full statement view are in the app is not spelled out on the page, so treat that as a question for the demo.
Do not confuse this with the staff tool. The agent who walks the market with a receipt book uses a separate app, covered in mobile apps for collection and customers. For the whole picture of software choices, see the loan and society management software buyer’s guide.
How to use it
Here is how a typical society would run it, role by role.
- Manager: decide what a member may see. Loan status, next due date and notices are fine. Internal remarks about a defaulter are not.
- Clerk: at account opening, check the mobile number against the KYC record and enter it correctly. A wrong number means the wrong person sees the account.
- Member: install the app and log in with the registered mobile number.
- Member: open the loan, look at the status and the next instalment, and note the amount before coming to the branch.
- Member: upload a document, for example a fresh address proof, from the phone camera.
- Clerk: compare the upload with the original, then accept or reject it in the system.
- Manager: at month end, ask the counter staff which questions members still bring in person, and fix those first.
Pair the app with SMS, WhatsApp and email alerts so a member who ignores the app still hears about a due date.
How it helps the business
The first thing you will notice is the counter. Picture a Monday morning at a small society branch: ten people waiting, six of them only want to know a balance or a due date. When those six can look at their phones, the clerk has time for cash, new accounts and the loan files that need thought.
The second effect is on recovery. A member who can see the instalment in advance is less likely to claim they did not know. Your field staff, using the routine in loan collection app receipts and daily cash reports, then spend visits on real defaulters, not on explaining amounts.
Numbers to watch, with no target attached:
- How many balance and due-date queries reach the counter in a day, before and after the app.
- How many members have installed it against your total active members.
- How many instalments arrive on or before the due date.
Common mistakes
- Launching without cleaning mobile numbers. Old numbers, shared numbers and blanks all cause trouble.
- Showing members more than they should see, such as internal notes.
- Treating the app as a replacement for the passbook before your auditor and members are comfortable.
- Not training the counter staff, so they cannot help a member who is stuck on the login.
- Forgetting members without smartphones. Keep the printed route open for them.
What to check in a demo
| Ask to see | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Login with a registered number | Shows how the member is identified and what happens if the number changes |
| Loan status and next due date | This is what most members open the app for |
| Deposit balance and statement | Confirm whether these exist, and in what form |
| Document upload and clerk approval | Check that staff can accept or reject from the back office |
| Notifications | See what triggers them and who can edit the text |
| Same record, two screens | Post a receipt at the counter and see it on the member’s phone |

FAQs
Can a member app replace the passbook?
Not on its own in most societies. Many members still want a printed entry, and your auditor may expect the passbook and ledger to agree. Treat the app as an extra view of the same account, and ask your CA before you change any member-facing practice.
Is the member app the same as the collection app?
No. The collection app is for agents and staff who take money in the field. The member app is for the customer, who only sees their own account. Both read from the same central records.
What if a member does not own a smartphone?
Keep the counter and the printed passbook working. SMS alerts and a phone call from the branch reach members who never install anything, so the app should be an option and never a requirement.
Does the app work for loans and deposits both?
Taxhint’s society page lists loan status, repayment management, document uploads and notifications in the member app. Whether deposit balances and statements show there is something to confirm in a live demo on your own account types.
