SMS, WhatsApp and Email Alerts for Due Dates and Receipts
Loan due date reminder software sends the borrower a message before the EMI falls due, and a receipt message the moment money is taken. It sounds small, yet for a lender with a few thousand live accounts it replaces a lot of phone calls and a good part of the overdue list.

What the alert feature is
Alerts are messages the system sends by itself when something happens on an account: an EMI is coming due, a payment is received, an instalment is missed, a loan is sanctioned or closed. The channels are SMS, WhatsApp and email, and some systems add automated calling.
The consumer loan software page from Taxhint lists SMS, email and WhatsApp integration, automated EMI reminders, and IVR calling with tracking. Anything beyond that, such as the exact wording of templates or which provider sends them, is something to confirm in a demo. If you are choosing a system across lender types, our buyer’s guide to loan and society software sets out the full list of things to compare.
How to set it up and run it
This is the sequence a branch manager or office head usually follows.
- Decide the events. Typically: reminder a few days before due date, reminder on the due date, receipt confirmation, missed instalment, and loan closure.
- Write the message templates. Short, in the borrower’s language, with the name, amount, due date and a contact number. SMS and WhatsApp templates usually need approval through your provider, so do this early.
- Clean the mobile numbers. A reminder to a wrong number is worse than none. Ask the clerk to confirm the mobile at every visit.
- Set timing. Pick the days before due date and a sensible hour. A message at midnight annoys people.
- Turn on receipt alerts at the counter and in the field. When the collection agent records a payment, the borrower’s phone should buzz within moments.
- Review the delivery log. Each morning, glance at what failed and why, then fix the number or the template.
- Link to follow-up. Borrowers who stay overdue after the reminders move to the call list. See recovery management: follow-ups, notices and field visits.
How it helps the business
The change is simple. People forget dates, and most late payers are not refusing, only distracted. A reminder removes the excuse.
- Fewer calls from the recovery desk. Staff spend time on genuine problem accounts instead of reminding everyone.
- Fewer disputes. A receipt message with amount and date settles the argument about whether the agent deposited the money.
- Cleaner overdue list. The number to watch is how many accounts slip past the due date by even one cycle. Compare it month to month after you switch alerts on, without expecting a magic figure.
- Agent accountability. If the borrower gets a receipt every time, short deposits are caught on the same day.
Picture a weekly-EMI borrower who runs a vegetable stall. She gets a message the evening before collection day and a receipt the moment the agent leaves. She either keeps the cash ready or calls to say she cannot, which is useful to know. To see how overdue accounts are then graded, read penalty, overdue and NPA classification features. Borrowers who also use the lender’s app can see the same information there; see the customer and member mobile app.
Common mistakes
- Sending the same reminder to everyone, whether they are current or already two cycles behind.
- Using English only for borrowers who read Hindi, Gujarati or another language.
- Never checking failed deliveries.
- Messages that carry too much detail, such as the full outstanding balance of a loan, to a number that might belong to someone else.
- Forgetting that WhatsApp and SMS have provider rules on templates and consent. Check them with your provider and your own policy.
- Threatening wording in reminders. Keep the tone polite and factual.
What to check in a demo
- Show the list of alert events and which ones you can switch on or off.
- Edit a message template and see the preview with sample data.
- Record a collection and show the receipt message arriving on a real phone.
- Open the delivery log and find a failed message with its reason.
- Ask how many days before the due date a reminder can be set, and whether the schedule can differ by product.
- Ask whether messages can go in more than one language.
- Ask what you pay for message credits, apart from the software, and who supplies them.

FAQs
Do alerts replace collection calls?
Not fully. They handle the routine reminders, so your staff can call only the accounts that stay overdue.
Can the same alert go out on SMS and WhatsApp?
Usually you choose the channel per event, and some lenders send both. Ask in the demo how each channel is configured and billed.
Who pays for the messages?
Message credits normally come from the SMS or WhatsApp provider and are billed on use. Ask us for a quote and we will explain what is included and what is separate.
What if a borrower’s mobile number changes?
The clerk updates the number on the account, and later alerts go to the new one. Make it a habit to confirm the mobile at each visit.
