Trademark Class 27: Carpets, Rugs, Mats and Wallpaper
Trademark class 27 protects brands on carpets, rugs, mats, matting, linoleum and wallpaper. Carpet weavers, yoga-mat brands and flooring sellers file their trademarks here.
What class 27 covers
The Nice Classification heading for Class 27 reads: “Carpets, rugs, mats and matting, linoleum and other materials for covering existing floors; wall hangings, not of textile.”
WIPO’s explanatory note says the class covers mainly products to be added as coverings to floors and walls that are already built. In short, it goes on top of a floor or wall and is not part of the structure.
India uses the current Nice edition, NCL (13-2026), in force from 1 January 2026.

What is NOT in class 27
WIPO’s note sends these floor and wall products to other classes:
| Item | Where it goes |
|---|---|
| Floor tiles of metal | Class 6 |
| Non-metal floor tiles and wooden floorboards | Class 19 |
| Electrically heated carpets | Class 11 |
| Geotextiles | Class 19 |
| Mats for infant playpens | Class 20 |
| Wall hangings of textile | Class 24 |
Watch the last row: a textile wall hanging is Class 24, a non-textile one Class 27.
Who usually files in class 27
Carpet weavers and exporters
Makers of hand-knotted, tufted and flat-weave carpets and rugs selling under their own label. A rug exporter selling under its own name abroad is a typical filer.
Fitness and home brands
Sellers of yoga mats, gym mats, bath mats and door mats, often through marketplaces.
Flooring and decor firms
Brands of vinyl flooring, artificial grass and wallpaper for homes, offices and cars.
Tips before filing
Search before you weave the label
Run a proper search of the IP India register in Class 27 for your name and similar-sounding words.
Separate floors from walls
List carpets, mats and wallpaper by name. Tiles and wooden flooring go in Class 19. In practice, a Faridabad showroom selling carpets and vitrified tiles needs both classes.
Watch the textile line
Textile wall hangings belong in Class 24. If you make both textile and non-textile pieces, file in both classes.
Add retail if you sell direct
A showroom or online store selling your range is a Class 35 service, worth filing if the store carries the brand.
Frequently asked questions
Are yoga mats in trademark class 27?
Yes, yoga mats sit in Class 27. WIPO’s explanatory note lists bath mats, door mats, gymnastic mats and yoga mats as Class 27 goods. Mats for infant playpens are the exception and go to Class 20. Exercise equipment sits in Class 28, and we can file both classes in one application.
Is wallpaper in class 27?
Yes, wallpaper is a Class 27 product, including textile wallpaper, according to WIPO’s note. Wall hangings that are not of textile are also here. Textile wall hangings, though, belong in Class 24. If you also sell tiles or paint, we split your list so each item lands in the right class.
Do vinyl flooring and tiles go in class 27?
Vinyl and linoleum floor coverings laid over an existing floor are Class 27 goods. Floor tiles are different: metal tiles are Class 6 and non-metal tiles and wooden floorboards are Class 19. The test in WIPO’s note is whether the product is a covering added to a floor that already exists. We review your catalogue and put each item in the class it belongs to.
Can I file for car mats in class 27?
Yes, automobile carpets are named in the Class 27 note, so car floor mats sit here. List the exact items you sell so the Registry examines the mark for those goods. We prepare the specification so it covers your range without stretching into goods you have no plans to sell.
What is the government fee for class 27?
The government fee is ₹4,500 per class when an individual, startup or small enterprise e-files Form TM-A, and ₹9,000 per class for other applicants. Paper filing costs ₹5,000 and ₹10,000. A carpet exporter registered as a company without small-enterprise status pays ₹9,000 online. We confirm the right category before filing.
What it costs
Our fee plus the government fee that applies to your case, quoted before you commit. Tell us the situation and we will price it exactly.
The Form TM-A fee is charged per class, and individuals, startups and small enterprises pay half, so Udyam registration or DPIIT startup recognition can halve it. Most carpet and mat brands need only Class 27; textile wall hangings in Class 24 add one more fee.
| Applicant (Form TM-A) | E-filing, per class | Physical filing, per class |
|---|---|---|
| Individual, startup or small enterprise | ₹4,500 | ₹5,000 |
| Any other applicant | ₹9,000 | ₹10,000 |
