How to Check Whether a Nidhi Company Is Registered

Before you put money into any of the nidhi registered companies near you, spend ten minutes checking whether the company is really what it says it is. Plenty of local lenders use the word “Nidhi” on a signboard without having the Central Government declaration that lets them take deposits. This guide shows what to look up, where, and how to judge a Nidhi without relying on anyone’s ranking of the best Nidhi company.

In this guide

What “registered” actually means for a Nidhi

Registration is only the first half. A Nidhi is first incorporated as a public company under the Companies Act, 2013, with a name ending in “Nidhi Limited”. That gives it a CIN. The second half is the declaration under NDH-4, which the Central Government grants after checking at least 200 members and net owned funds of Rs 20 lakh, among other things. Our Nidhi company registration guide walks through both stages.

A company with a CIN but no declaration cannot take deposits from members or lend to them. So “registered with the ROC” is not enough. You want proof of both.

Step 1: Look the company up on the MCA portal

Start with the company master data on the MCA portal. Search by name or CIN and read three things:

  • The company name ends with “Nidhi Limited” and the status shows as Active.
  • The company class is public, and the date of incorporation matches what the staff told you.
  • The list of directors is there, with names you can match to the people running the branch.

If the name does not appear at all, stop. If it appears under a different name, ask why. A company that has filed no annual returns for years is also a warning, because a live Nidhi has to file regularly.

Step 2: Ask for the NDH-4 declaration

Ask to see the Central Government declaration issued on the NDH-4 application, and note the date. A Nidhi must apply within 120 days of incorporation, and the Government has 45 days to decide, with deemed approval if it does not. A genuine Nidhi will have this paper ready and will not mind you photographing it. We explain the filing in our post on NDH-4 for a Nidhi company. The short version for a depositor: no declaration, no deposits.

Also ask which financial year it last filed NDH-1 and NDH-3 for. Those returns show it is behaving like a Nidhi, not just calling itself one.

Step 3: Check how it actually operates

The Nidhi Rules draw bright lines. Use them as a quick test.

CheckWhat the Rules say
Who can joinMembers only; deposits and loans are for members
NameMust end with “Nidhi Limited”
AdvertisingCannot advertise to solicit deposits or pay brokerage for them
Banned businessChit funds, hire purchase, leasing, insurance, current accounts, lending to companies
DepositsFixed 6 to 60 months, recurring 12 to 60 months, savings balance up to Rs 1 lakh
Safety marginNOF to deposits not more than 1:20; term deposits of at least 10% of deposits kept with a bank

The figures above are as we read the Rules. Please confirm the current text, and see our explainer on the Nidhi Rules for more detail. A Nidhi that pushes newspaper ads for high returns, pays agents a cut, or opens accounts for non-members fails the test on the spot.

A common mix-up: RBI

Some people ask whether the company has an RBI licence. A Nidhi does not need one. It is not an NBFC registered with RBI, and its permission is the NDH-4 declaration. If a seller shows you an RBI certificate as proof of a Nidhi, ask more questions. The full explanation is in our post on the Nidhi licence and RBI.

How to judge a good Nidhi, without a “top” list

Rankings of the best or top Nidhi company are usually paid listings, so we do not publish one. Judge on facts instead:

  • Clean filing record on the MCA portal for the last three years.
  • Audited accounts you can ask to read, and an AGM held on time.
  • Deposit rates inside the permitted ceiling, not far above what banks offer.
  • Loans only against listed securities such as gold, property or deposits, and only to members.
  • Straight answers about the term deposit it keeps with a bank.

Understand the basics first with our primer on what a Nidhi company is, and read how Section 406 of the Companies Act frames it.

Red flags worth walking away from

  • Promised returns that look too good compared with bank rates.
  • No receipts, or receipts without the company name and CIN.
  • Pressure to bring friends in for a commission.
  • Refusal to show the NDH-4 declaration or balance sheet.
  • A signboard that says “Nidhi” but the legal name does not end in “Nidhi Limited”.

If something looks off, take the CIN to a CA before you deposit anything. It costs little compared with recovering money later.

FAQs

How do I check if a Nidhi company is registered?

Search the company name or CIN in the MCA portal master data and confirm it is an active public company ending in “Nidhi Limited”. Then ask to see the NDH-4 declaration from the Central Government.

Does a CIN prove a Nidhi can take deposits?

No. A CIN only shows the company exists. Without the NDH-4 declaration, a Nidhi cannot accept deposits from members or lend to them.

Which is the best Nidhi company to join?

We do not rank firms. Compare filing history, audited accounts, deposit rates within the permitted limit and whether the company holds the required bank term deposit.

Is a Nidhi regulated by RBI?

No. It is governed by the Companies Act, the Nidhi Rules and the MCA, and it is not an NBFC registered with RBI. Check the current Rules and MCA portal for the latest position.
